Oakland’s front office will be in a pickle with their quarterback situation this offseason.
With Derek Carr’s knee surgery, the Raiders will have to find a quarterback to compete with Matt Schaub.
With the injury to Khalil Mack, the team will need to find another quarterback to replace the aging Justin Tucker.
The Oakland Raiders have been a strong pass-first team in the past, and that will change this offseason, especially after the departure of Derek Carr.
The Raiders are going to need to bring in another quarterback in the trade market, and the most obvious option is Khalil Smith, who will be 35 years old in 2018.
Smith will be the next to go, but Oakland is already dealing with a trade deadline and the possibility of a roster move this week.
Smith’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season, and Oakland is unlikely to be able to match the offer from Buffalo.
Smith is coming off of a career year in 2016, which included three Pro Bowl appearances, six All-Pro selections and a trip to the Pro Bowl in the process.
Smith was also named the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Year in 2017.
He’s a proven pro passer with great arm strength and the ability to win the deep ball.
Smith has had the benefit of having a solid supporting cast throughout his career, and he’s been able to play at a high level for the Raiders.
Smith’s passing numbers dipped in 2017, but he was able to put up some great numbers in 2017 in Oakland.
He led the league in passer rating and completion percentage.
Smith also had a strong season in 2016.
He had 972 yards passing with an average of 15.7 yards per attempt.
Smith has been the Raiders offensive coordinator for a couple of years now, and with Carr out for the year, the coaching staff is looking for a change.
If they are going in another direction, Smith would be the most likely candidate to take over.
Smith spent the first half of his career as a backup to Derek Carr in Oakland before the Raiders brought in a young quarterback named Carr to replace him.
Carr threw for 2,715 yards with 29 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
The Raiders lost a ton of talent to the trade deadline, and Smith has the ability and coaching pedigree to do the job.
